St.
Vincents to Hold Job Fair at Seasonal Shelter
Local, National Companies Will Take Applications
SAN
DIEGO St. Vincent de Paul Village will host a job fair at
its adult seasonal shelter, located at the corner of 16th Street
and Newton Avenue, on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 12:30 p.m. As many as
150 single men and women living in Village facilities are expected
to participate in the fair.
Thirteen
companies, including Coca-Cola, the U.S. Navy and Goodwill Industries,
will be on hand circulating job fliers and encouraging attendees
to fill out applications for open positions.
For
many who access St. Vincents services, unemployment is the
only obstacle keeping them from self-sufficiency, says Tina Walker,
program manager of St. Vincents Career and Education Department.
"All
too often people assume the homeless are on the streets because
they have a drug problem or are lazy," she says. "The
truth is many homeless people have lost a job or may even have a
job that just doesnt pay enough.
"St.
Vincents has already seen an increase in the number of people
accessing its employment and job-readiness programs due to corporate
downsizing while others have been overlooked for raises because
companies have been forced to cut back on overhead."
Walker
says the job fair is beneficial to all groups that participate.
"It
not only gives our clients a chance to reenter the workforce, but
it also introduces qualified and motivated job seekers living at
St. Vincents to the companies that participate in the fair."
