Lady Golfers Will Tee it Up to Support Village Women and Children
Golf Clinic Will Add Unique Twist to Traditional Charity Tournament

SAN DIEGO — As many as 144 women will take to Barona Creek Golf Club, located at 1932 Wildcat Canyon Road in Lakeside, in the inaugural W.A.V.E. (Women Against Violent Environments) Charity Golf Tournament and Clinic on Friday, May 18 at 1 p.m.

Participants will support programs and services at St. Vincent de Paul Village aimed at assisting women and children who have taken to the streets to avoid violent home environments.

St. Vincent’s Special Events Director Carl Rustin anticipates a strong showing from women golfers across San Diego County.

"The goal of this event is to raise funds for one of the fastest growing populations among homeless people: women with children," Rustin says. "The ladies participating in this event recognize the importance of a place like St. Vincent’s where abused women and children can access services which first and foremost provide safety, but more importantly also offer a solution to the complex problems accompanied by single motherhood, spousal abuse and homelessness."

In addition to a traditional 18-hole scramble, W.A.V.E. golfers will also have the unique opportunity to participate in an hour-long clinic.

"You don’t see many clinics tied in to golf tournaments, nor do you see many tournaments specifically for women," Rustin says. "By offering the two together, we’re attracting not only accomplished women golfers, but also those who are relatively new to the game."
After the women complete their rounds of golf, they will reconvene in the clubhouse where they will enjoy a dinner, auction and raffle.

St. Vincent’s offers a multitude of services for women and children including basic parenting classes, abused women groups, couples and family therapy, child development programs, a children’s library, on-site county-run schools, children’s counseling and medical evaluations and vaccinations.
