Mothers Day Tea a Time for Celebration, Thanks
Physicians and Midwives Reunited With Grateful Moms
SAN DIEGO St. Vincent de Paul Village,
1501 Imperial Avenue, will host the seventh annual Mothers
Day Tea on Tuesday, May 14, at 1:30 p.m.
The event brings new mothers who received prenatal
care at the Villages free medical clinic back to be reunited
with the volunteer physicians and midwives whose care ensures healthy
births for hundreds of less-fortunate children annually.
"We like to honor our mothers who come forward
and make the responsible decision to seek prenatal care," says
St. Vincents President Fr. Joe Carroll. "It also gives
moms the unique opportunity to say thank you to the medical professionals
whose compassion and caring resulted in healthy new lives."
For the volunteer doctors and midwives who attend,
the event offers the opportunity to witness first-hand the magnitude
of the free services they provide, Fr. Joe says.
"Each of our clinic volunteers knows the
importance of their work," Fr. Joe says. "But to see 40
or 50 healthy babies whom you helped care for all at the same time,
it truly makes them understand the immense difference they make
in the lives of homeless mothers and children."
The prenatal services offered at St. Vincents
save hospitals an estimated $250,000 each month in expenses that
would have otherwise been incurred to care for infants born prematurely.
Expectant mothers after receiving prenatal care at the Village
clinic go on to deliver at local hospitals, such as UCSD
Medical Center.
