For Once, Father Joe Will Give Away Money
White House Sub-awards to be Presented to Two Area Organizations
SAN DIEGO — Father Joe’s
Villages for the first time ever will award grants to two area human-services
organizations on Wednesday, June 18, at 10
a.m., at its Toussaint Teen Center, located at 1404 Fifth Avenue.
This first
round of sub-awards, which will be presented
to the organizations by Village President Father Joe Carroll and
total more than $64,000, represents
one area of assistance provided by the Village Training Institute (VTI),
a Father Joe’s Villages program made possible by a $673,000
grant from the White House Office of Faith- and Community-based Initiatives.
The Village
was the only
California agency to receive the new federal funding and represents one of
21 organizations nationwide to be given a grant.
Point Loma Nazarene University’s
Health Promotion Center will receive $39,691 from Father Joe’s
Villages. The funding will provide operational support in the form
of personnel, supplies and equipment for a health clinic
for
uninsured families and individuals of the City Heights community.
A $25,000
grant will be awarded to All Congregations Together for its Elder
Transportation and Assistance Program, a service designed to help
semi-ambulatory senior citizens
travel to medical appointments, the grocery store and other activities
throughout the community.
Father Joe’s Villages’ development
of VTI was designed to help smaller organizations identify funding
sources, train staff and develop
effective
social-services programs.
Father Joe says while the organization has
now formally established a training arm, lending its expertise
to help smaller agencies is
nothing new to the Village.
"For years we’ve helped social-services agencies around the globe
which have sought our help to establish effective assistance programs
in their communities," he says. "VTI has expanded our ability not only
to teach, but also to provide funding to smaller organizations." For
