St. Vincent’s Beneficiary of Proposition
46 Bond Measure
Funding Will Help Village Rehabilitate Aging Facilities
SAN DIEGO — St. Vincent
de Paul Village was one of a handful of local agencies selected yesterday
to receive funding as part of the state’s Proposition 46 bond
measure, which was approved by California voters last November.
The $943,056 allocation from
the state’s Department of Housing and Community Development
will be used by the Village to rehabilitate three aging residential
buildings at the organization’s 1501 Imperial Avenue location.
"This disbursement comes
at a crucial time for St. Vincent’s," says Village President
Father Joe Carroll. "We’re weathering a donation drought
and our facilities desperately need a facelift, an endeavor we could
not afford alone."
The allocation – coming at a time when
many government programs are facing drastic cuts due to the state’s
budget crisis – also
highlights St. Vincent’s fiscal responsibility, Father Joe says.
"There’s no question
the state wants to ensure their economic support is being utilized
efficiently," he says. "The Village has a proven track
record of financial stringency, ensuring that every dollar – whether
it’s from a private donor, a foundation or the government – is
stretched as far as possible and used responsibly."
The rehabilitation projects are
targeted to be completed by the fall of next year and include the
installation of an energy management system, which will result in
significant utilities savings for St. Vincent’s, the repair
of a leaking roof, improvements in sleeping quarters, new carpeting
and replacement of furniture.
The repairs and replenishment of the
facilities also play an important role in client rehabilitation,
Father Joe says.
"We pride ourselves on being
a top-notch human-services organization," he says. "From
the services we provide to the architecture and condition of our
facilities, we work constantly to return a sense of dignity and hope
to our homeless neighbors and these improvements will reaffirm our
commitment to that end."
