Local,
National Companies Will Participate in Village Job Fair
Employment Brings St. Vincents Clients One Step Closer to
Self-sufficiency
SAN
DIEGO St. Vincent de Paul Village will host a job fair at
its 1501 Imperial Avenue location on Thursday, June 28, at 12:30
p.m. in an effort to broaden job-search opportunities for clients
currently accessing services at the downtown homeless rehabilitation
center.
As
many as 12 companies and organizations will participate in the fair,
including Viejas Casino, Coca Cola Bottling Co., the City of San
Diego, YMCA and Sodexho Marriott Services.
The
job fair is one of the many services St. Vincents offers its
clients who are accessing its Career and Education Center, says
Jack Yang, program supervisor of the department.
"The
job fair is an important tool for us because it brings potential
employers to the Village to interact with and interview our clients,"
says Yang. "In addition, we offer a multitude of programs such
as GED, adult-basic-education, resume-writing and dress-for-success
classes as well as job-training and job-search tools. A number of
our clients are pursuing or have completed their college education."
Yang
says while finding employment is an integral part of rehabilitation,
its not the end-all solution.
"Many
of our clients have other issues which contribute to their current
homelessness," he says. "Fortunately, the Villages
approach to helping people regain their self-sufficiency offers
clients solutions to every contributing factor if theres
an addiction problem, abuse problem, medical problem we have the
services to address it. Putting people in a position to earn a livable
wage is part of that consortium of programs."
