Sold Out San Diego International Triathlon
Set for Tomorrow
For 19th Year, Race Will Benefit St. Vincents
SAN DIEGO As many as
1,350 athletes from around the world will compete in the 19th annual
Wells Fargo San Diego International Triathlon on Sun., June 30,
starting with a 1K swim at Spanish Landing at 7 a.m.
After completing the swimming
leg, the athletes will embark on a 30K (18.6- mile) bike course
to Cabrillo Monument and back to Spanish Landing. The triathlons
final leg is a grueling 10K (6.2-mile) run that ends at Embarcadero
Marina Park North, just behind Seaport Village.
"This competition has become
one of the premiere triathlons in the sport," says Rick Kozlowski,
the events director. "Weve been sold out for six
weeks and will have a record number of competitors."
Of those competitors, two Australians
stand out as favorites to win the event. On the mens side,
two-time defending Wells Fargo San Diego International Triathlon
champion Chris McCormack is again a favorite. Representing the women,
fellow two-time defending champion Michellie (Muh-Kee-Lee) Jones,
a 2000 Olympic silver medalist, is looking for another consecutive
top finish in the event.
As a precursor to Sundays
event, the 5th annual San Diego Kids Triathlon was held today.
More than 100 junior triathletes ranging in age from 8 to 14 competed
on abbreviated 2- and 4-mile courses.
Last years race raised
$20,000 for St. Vincents, but Village President Fr. Joe Carroll
is confident this years event will eclipse that total.
"We have a record number
of competitors and were confident that will translate into
a record contribution to our organization," he says. "Wed
like to thank all of the competitors, Wells Fargo Bank and Koz Enterprises
for all of the support and hard work."
