St. Vincent’s to Dish
Up Labor Day Meal
As Season’s Change, Daily Meal at Village Remains a Constant
SAN DIEGO — St.
Vincent de Paul Village will dish up a special meal for
San Diego’s homeless in celebration of Labor Day on Monday, September
1, at 11 a.m., at its 1501 Imperial Avenue location.
Needy children,
families and single adults will enjoy a meal that includes
fried chicken, beans, coleslaw and potato salad prepared entirely by St.
Vincent’s
kitchen staff, volunteers and Village residents.
As many as 500 needy San
Diegans are expected at the special meal and Village cooks are
prepared for the large number of guests.
"We serve over
one million meals annually and provide lunch service to the homeless
every day of the year," says Father Joe Carroll, president of
St. Vincent’s. "Our clients have come to depend on the
Village as a source of nourishment and fellowship and our hope is
that the constant presence we have
in their lives and the trust that is inevitably developed will encourage
the chronically homeless to access other services we provide."
Those
services, including long-term residential programs, career and
education classes, chemical-dependency programs, a full-service children’s
services department and counseling, provide a comprehensive solution
to homelessness.
All of the programs are located on-site and are known collectively as
the Continuum of Care, a rehabilitative model adopted and endorsed nationally
by the U.S. Department
of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
