Local Agency Sole California Recipient of Faith-Based
Grant
Pilot Program Will Channel Know-how, Funds to Community Organizations
SAN DIEGO St. Vincent
de Paul Village, San Diegos nationally recognized homeless
rehabilitation agency, will receive one of 21 national grants tomorrow,
aimed at developing systems to instruct and fund smaller agencies
and groups on how to most effectively provide services to the homeless
and needy.
The Compassion Capital award
is the first national funding outreach endeavor for the Office for
Faith-Based Initiatives, and will distribute $25 Million to worthy
organizations around the country. Funded by the Department of Health
& Human Services, the $673,000 local grant will allow St. Vincent
de Paul Village to partner with churches and other small outreach
groups, providing them with the framework and skills to change the
lives of our less-fortunate neighbors.
While channeling such funding
through existing agencies is a new approach, the idea of training
others to follow solid examples is something that St. Vincent de
Paul Village has advocated and been engaged in for some time.
"Weve been doing
this for years, hosting teams from homeless agencies around the
world," said Village President Father Joe Carroll. "They
visit to learn about our uniquely successful approach, and how they
can replicate it in their own communities. Were happy to have
the recognition and the money that allows us to outreach
within our own community, utilizing the abundant goodwill of San
Diegos faith-based community to help our ever-increasing homeless
population."
As one of a handful of agency
invitees, St. Vincent de Paul Village Vice President of Development
Matt Packard is attending the award ceremony scheduled for Thursday,
October 3, 11:30 a.m. EST, at the offices of fellow grant recipients
WorldVision, 1931 Brentwood Road NE, Washington, D.C. For more information
on St. Vincents grant and outreach plans, please call 619-687-1000.
