No Shortage of Holiday Meals at St. Vincent
de Paul Village
Outreach at St. Vincents Continues Well Beyond the Holiday
Season
SAN DIEGO St. Vincent
de Paul Village will serve two Thanksgiving meals on Wednesday,
November 27, starting with an 11 a.m. gathering at 1501 Imperial
Avenue for non-resident clients and a resident dinner to follow
at 5 p.m. at the same location.
At the morning meal, as many
as 1,500 homeless family members, single adults and underserved
area residents will enjoy a hot turkey dinner with all the trimmings,
served by a corps of more than 100 volunteers.
Later that afternoon, 900 Village
residents will enjoy their own Thanksgiving feast with ham, turkey
and other holiday favorites on the menu. Fr. Joe Carroll, president
of the Village, says the St. Vincents meal program extends
beyond the holiday months.
"A number of charitable
organizations participate in seasonal outreach," Fr. Joe says.
"But the thousands of homeless and underserved members of our
community need warm meals and nourishment year-round and St. Vincents
meets that need by serving over one million meals annually."
On Thanksgiving Day, 100 Village
children and adults will enjoy a holiday meal provided by the Hard
Rock Café La Jolla, 909 Prospect, at 11 a.m.
"Holiday meals are an incredibly
beneficial part of the homeless rehabilitation process," Fr.
Joe says. "They (meals) instill a sense of dignity in our homeless
neighbors and give them hope for a new beginning."
