Extra Services Help Homeless Beat the Heat
By Christine McElroy

With the approval of the Indio City Council on July 21, Martha’s Village & Kitchen began its third year of providing emergency shelter to homeless families and single adults within its Dan Dunlap Center. The shelter will continue to serve the needy of Coachella Valley through mid-October.

“In addition to a cool place to sleep overnight, we offer our guests a shower, first aid treatment, dinner and breakfast,” say Gloria Gomez, co-founder of Martha’s Village & Kitchen. “However, we need help from the community and ask for volunteers to help us in the early evening. We also welcome donations of hygiene products and money.

The emergency shelter nearly doubles the number of people served at the Village overnight. In addition, the Village opens its public showers for seven hours daily.

For more information and to help support the shelter, please call 760.347.4741, ext. 308.
