Just about anything you want to give to St. Vincent de Paul Village – car, boat, money, time, talent – is welcome. The contribution from recent Helix High School grad, Kathryn Defenbaugh, came woven in yarn, time, and talent as layettes for newborns at the Village.

Just before Easter, Defenbaugh delivered three layette sets she had knitted during her senior year as a community service project, according to Ann Conn, chairman of the Ladies Guild layette committee.

“Her gift represented a labor of love,” Conn said. “Katy taught herself to knit the layette sweaters, booties and caps by figuring out the directions from patterns in knitting books.”

Defenbaugh became interested in knitting as a young girl through Georgia Ryan, the mother of Sister Ellen Marie Ryan who worked in Father Joe’s Villages’ home office for many years.
