PLANNING FOR THE BEST

By Michael Wall
Director of Planned Giving

On growing old, the poet Robert Browning mused: “The best is yet to be…The last of life for which the first was made.”

If we believe the glossy maturity publications, an older person’s life is endless – travel, cruises, exercise classes and golf games. As Planned Giving Director, the people I meet are very different from those familiar pictures. Most seniors I meet live with time for entertainment and activity, but also with time and concern for family, health, community and church. Their lives reflect the importance of preparation for an active and meaningful life after retirement.

There is a connection between successful retirement planning and successful estate planning. They go hand in hand. Many seniors have accomplished the seemingly gargantuan task of estate planning. They not only plan for their family’s future, but also they plan that a charity, like Father Joe’s Villages, has a share in their estate. Bequests, charitable trusts and the Pooled Income Fund are available as tools to insure charitable inclusion in your estate planning.

Tests of character and faithfulness are a part of growing older. If unprepared, hardships can be overwhelming. However, life and estate planning for the best and the worst and having faith in God bring peace and happiness as you live “the best part of your life.”

There is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under heaven. A time to be born, and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to uproot the plant. A time to teardown, and a time to build… A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance. -Ecclesiastes 3:1-4

In times of financial turmoil, Father Joe’s Villages offers a great opportunity for investment. The St. Louise de Marillac Pooled Income Fund is paying more than 6.7 percent while other investments earn much less. The Marillac Pooled Income Fund provides income for life and a gift to Father Joe’s Villages after your life.
