St. Vincent's
to Assist Victims of Mexico Earthquake
By
Mark Tsuchiya
St.
Vincent de Paul Village, under the auspices of its south-of-the-border
charity Padre Luis Jayme International Outreach, is accepting cash
donations on behalf of victims of Tuesday's Mexico earthquake, which
left as many as 10,000 people homeless. Donations of food and clothing
are not yet needed, as emergency crews on-site are still assessing
the areas of greatest need. The Village will make an appointment
at such a time when those specific needs are identified.
St.
Vincent's has reached out to victims of natural disasters south
of the border since 1985, when the San Diego charity provided emergency
assistance after a major temblor in Mexico City.
During
that outreach, St. Vincent's assumed operation of a closed water
factory and began producing clean drinking water, which it distributed
for free to residents of the city.
The
outreach program, named after one of San Diego's earliest missionaries,
Padre Luis Jayme, provides more than $1 million of assistance to
Mexico's less fortunate and victims of natural disasters annually
and administers its efforts through a network of south-of-the-border
human services agencies.
