Groups Brighten Holidays at St. Vincent’s

Thousands of individuals volunteer their time and talent to help the needy at St. Vincent de Paul Village each year. There are also hundreds of civic, religious, school, corporate and military groups who organize themselves to do special projects and activities for or with Village residents (see box).

During the winter of 2003, some groups were involved in special events such as the relief efforts for wildfire victims, Halloween Carnival, Thanksgiving Day Run/Walk, and Christmas Festival. Other groups hosted the children at The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, made children’s blankets, and conducted drives for toys and holidays items.

All this activity added up to 2,500 volunteer hours and $7,000 worth of donations from October through December alone! Special thanks to the group leaders like Naval Chief Jorge Lee, Chaplain Robert Slaughter, and Alva Marchena. to name but a few, who coordinated various efforts, sometimes on a moment’s notice.

St. Vincent’s staff and residents heartily thank all the volunteers, individuals and groups, for their generosity during the holiday season. (Box)
