I am blessed. My job as planned giving director for Father Joes Villages for the past nine years gives me a unique opportunity to meet and work with wonderful people who want to join Father Joe in his mission to create a preferential option for the poor. The
men and women that I meet are teachers who are great examples on how to
live life to the fullest. They have stories that would fill volumes. Their
lives are varied and interesting. They are executives, entrepreneurs,
teachers, investors and doctors. They have served in World War II and
the Korean War. They have lived in South Africa, South America, Germany,
Switzerland, Austria and Ireland. They have moved to San Diego from New
York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, South Dakota or just about every state.
Their lives are journeys that gave them first-hand knowledge of hard times. I
have learned from the excellent example of a woman who escaped the terror
of Nazi Germany and prospered because she took investing classes at New
York University. I worked with a man who grew up in the Navy
and, following his tour of duty, succeeded because he took business classes
at night school. In
Planned Giving, the men and women I meet have two distinguishing characteristics:
they realize the importance of estate planning and they have a desire
to use their resources to help the poor and the homeless. At the end of
their lives, they reaffirmed their desire to share the results of their
hard work and frugality. They have made Wills, Living Trusts and Charitable
Trusts that reflect their values. They are good teachers. They can rest
assured that Those who teach many people to do what is right, shall
shine like stars for all eternity. (Daniel 12:3) If
