imageThe Village Mobile Health ClinicThe Mobile Health Clinic (MHC) provides crucial outreach healthcare services to homeless people living on the streets of San Diego. In a city lacking adequate shelter beds, this type of creative programming is vital to the survival of our homeless neighbors in need. The MHC takes healthcare to homeless people in several different sites throughout the City's core and extends these services to the City Winter Shelter each year. The MHC is staffed by physicians who are dual board certified in Family Medicine and Psychiatry, an ideal mix of specialties given that up to 40% of homeless people are severely mentally ill. "Homeless people have all the same health problems as people with homes, but at elevated rates. Without a home, there is no place to recuperate from an illness or to treat an injury, and health problems tend to get far worse before they get better."** Without transportation or health insurance, homeless people are forced to seek ambulance transportation to emergency rooms for the most basic of healthcare needs. The MHC saves taxpayer dollars by taking healthcare to the homeless without requiring insurance payments.
